Taking flight on a new career with NV College

Published: 08 Feb 2026

Moira was looking for a new career with the right work/life balance when she moved to the Nambucca Valley. Prior to this move, she’d been an air hostess, travelling domestically and then internationally, and wanted something that enabled more time at home and near family.

‘Working in travel was great but it was tiring and played havoc with my circadian rhythms,’ she said.

Moira wanted a role where her skills as an air hostess were transferable. She had experience with elderly travelling in wheelchairs and customers who had special needs and thought this might be an area she’d excel and enjoy.

Next step

Online, Moira found information on a CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support and signed up with NV College for a traineeship in February 2025. She hasn’t looked back.

‘Learning and being guided by experienced trainers and care workers in the facilities was really helpful.’

An area of the course that exceeded her expectations included the support from her trainer.

‘Mili was fantastic, she’s incredibly intelligent and her guidance was invaluable. In her class you are free to be yourself and it’s a safe space. She was so supportive, friendly and kind.’

Another area that exceeded her expectations were the friendships she formed during the course.

‘Our class was made up of people of different ages and backgrounds, some of us trained in different facilities and we all finished our course at different times, but we formed a WhatsApp group that we are still using now. I miss studying with them and made some true friendships which I didn’t expect to do.’

‘The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support felt like a real accomplishment completing it.’

Now Moira has completed her studies, she’s in the unique position of working three days a week at an aged care facility and two days working in Home and Community at a local non for profit, getting the best of both worlds in caring for elderly in our community.

‘With home and community every day is different. I do social outings, welfare checks and medications,’ she said. ‘But I think working in the aged care facility is what I’d like to pursue. I’ve gotten to know the residents well and it’s really rewarding work.’
